How to use URL encoding/decoding

Local browser processing

Example

encodeURIComponent

café +

Result

caf%C3%A9%20%2B

Example

Form encode (+)

café +

Result

caf%C3%A9+%2B
  1. Actions

For a complete URL, choose encodeURI; for one parameter value, choose encodeURIComponent. Form encode (+) represents spaces with + and encodes a literal + as %2B.

Limitations and Notes

  • Percent encoding requires % followed by two hexadecimal digits, and the decoded bytes must be valid UTF-8. If decoding fails, check the original data rather than decoding repeatedly.

FAQ

Why does a plus sign become a space after decoding?

Form decode (+) treats + as a space; decodeURIComponent preserves +. Encode a literal plus as %2B to restore it.
